how to make the most beautiful felt flower garland -

One of Piper’s favorite pastimes is flipping through wedding magazines whilst sitting on a beach or lounging by a pool. She is her mama’s daughter, that one.

Last year, around the same time as her Unicorn Party, she became infatuated with the gorgeous, lush flower garlands that seem to be all the rage at bohemian weddings right now (good taste, girly!).

I wanted to figure out how to make one for her Unicorn Party, and when I mentioned it to her, she said, “And then I’ll hang it in my room forever, right?”

Which got me brainstorming ways to make a gorgeous, lush floral garland that could decorate her party and then permanently transition to bedroom decor.

And this is it y’all.

It is far from low maintenance, but it is just gorgeous and both of us are smitten. Also, I kind of don’t mind high maintenance projects if they A- turn out as well as this one did and B- are multipurpose like this garland.

To make one-

Gather a pile of felt or wool felt in your color palette (I used some individual sheets of wool felt and this wool felt set– I especially love that there are a couple of different shades of green included), green velvet ribbon (at least 3 yards), a mini hot glue gun and hot glue sticks, coordinating green thread and invisible thread (the invisible thread was perfect for handstitching the leaves onto the garland; I also used it for the centers of some of the felt flowers).

Cut out a whole pile of felt leaves (I used two colors of heathered greens and also a few pops of white with green ‘veining’)- I’m talking hundreds of leaves.

Cut a length of green velvet ribbon to the size of you’re finished garland (mine is 10 feet long). With your sewing machine, sew a line of overlapping leaves on top of the green ribbon (this will be your garland ‘base’).

Using invisible thread, hand stitch leaves onto the sides of the garland. Pinch each leaf at the base as you sew to make the leaves more realistic and less flat.

Then make a whole pile of felt flowers (a tutorial for how to make Rifle Paper Co. inspired felt flower is here, and I love love LOVE Delia’s felt flowers– those will totally work if you just increase the scale!).

Instead of sewing these onto the garland directly, I added ties to the back of each flower. That way we can reposition the flowers, or even take them off altogether, to suit various color palettes.
